Chuck Doswell stated:

It is this large release of latent heat from condensing water vapor that powers thunderstorms.

The claim that meteorologists think differences in density between moist and dry air power thunderstorms is counterfactual.

Paul Markowski and Yvette Richardson

Air parcels expand and cool as they move upward into lower ambient pressure, but the cooling can lead to phase changes for water vapor in the air. In deep moist convection, heat release during condensation—and, to a lesser extent, freezing—slows the cooling rate of the parcels as they continue upward.

I don’t see the contradiction here. Doswell and Markowski/Richardson both say latent heat release from the phase change of water vapor to liquid causes differences in temperature between the updraft and the environment. This is what Doswell says “powers thunderstorms.”

And the other comment, that differences in density between moist and dry air is not the main factor, is what Doswell says too. From Doswell’s comment: “The weight of the remaining air would be reduced by about 1%.” This small change in density would be minor compared to the “large release of latent heat.”

Can you be precise about how you find these statements contradictory? I’m not seeing it.

There are so many layers of absurdity in what you, Doswell, and Markowski/Richardson are saying (and leaving obscure) that its difficult to know where to start. First you’d have us believe updrafts are driven by heat. You never bother to explain how. And you just sidestep the issue that this has never been measured. And we’re to believe this heat is the result of condensation of water vapor. And you’d have us all pretend not to notice that water vapor was created by a low energy process–evaporation. So, you geniuses have turned the “phase change” of condensation into a perpetual motion machine that magically explains updrafts–AND EVEN TORNADOES!

You are right. They are not contradictory. They are all equally absurd.
